I'll post the correct 1953 Factory M-38A1 markings later today.

Here is an example. The M-38A1 U.S.A. Registration was applied with the 2" numbers centered and resting on the Hood Fording Cut Out and applied at same height and location on the drivers side. The spacing between the number and USA line was 1" and the dots were square. Note that the upper row was centered using the front of the "U" thru the dot after the "A".
U.S Army was not introduced on M-Series registrations until 1956. 2" is the only size the factory registration came, repaints can be found in 2", 3", and 4".
M-38A1's left the factory with only one painted on stencil which was the registration. TP-25 centered over the wheel openings was added at unit level along with MAX SPEED XX MPH on dash according to local or commanders regulation. There is a yellow decal "Bell Housing----- just above the Inst Panel. The pics of the factory decals are in your TM9-8014 Operators Manual.

thank-you for the response. Is there a way to find the correct registration #'s for this vehicle. It had been repainted and had no #'s on it

There are two Serial (chassis) number locations, one on the plates attached to the dash, the other is a serial number plate attached with four screws on the front of the passenger wheelhouse right next to the seat. When the vehicles go in to support unit shops for repaint ,some shops pencil the USA Number on back of the large plate on the dash or on back of the plate beside the seat.
Other than that it will be a guessing game that is determined by changes in various drain holes, battery covers, firewall features, grill features, chassis changes, and other factory added features.

You can also look on the drivers side frame rail just aft of the bumper for numbers that were stamped into the frame. This was not done at the factory on A1s like it was on the MBs and GPWs. They were stamped on the frames during a maintenance period while in the service. Again not all A1s have this but my A1 has the registration # and serial number stamped into the frame and I have seen this on other A1s and M38s. Again this is not a very common thing but worth a look.

Here is what I have. S/n is not pictured but the registration # 20999713 is there.

And the applicable factory installed decals are available from some of your favorite MV parts suppliers. Rick Larsen Stencils is a very good supplier. The originals were the water applicable type but the current stick on's are identical in appearance. Will try to get pics of the decals on my M-38A1.
