MOTOR STABLES INSPECTION 2015/2016/2017,2018, 2019

Post by Joe Gopan » Wed May 13, 2015 4:43 pm

Out for MOTOR STABLES 2015. They all fired up instantly after 5 months rest and all passed inspection with flying colors, no PM Indicators. All they need is a good run to burn up that last years E-10 fuel.

Long time friends, MB since 1971, M-38A1 since 1975, and CCKW since 1983. All are maintained exactly the way the U.S. Army taught me and always "Ready for Duty, Sir".

Been part of my fleet since importing it from Danish Army in'83. Rare is the ride in the CCKW that I do not remember the WWII Veterans who rode in these trucks.

Motor Stables is over, trucks are ready and have had a bath, glass is clean, will choose my mount Memorial day AM.
This year's Motor Stables has a bitter reminder, as there was a fatality in the Fourth of July Parade 2014 due to brake failure and the legal process is not leaving a bolt unturned, it is assumed that restored antique vehicles are in the condition they leave the factory with no modifications and there are no excuses.

I chose the CCKW instead of the MB and M-38 in order to demonstrate that a 74 year old army truck can be restored to mechanical condition that exceeds new due to updates in the braking system plus the truck was marching with the WWII Veterans.

Be your own Motor Sergeant, practice Motor Stables often and you, too, can have "turn key" MV's like these that are always ready to go when you are. This is the fun part, it lets me travel back 55 years in time to those fun Army days and all my aches and pains seem to go away when I get them out for a spin.

Thanks Niblet. and it looks like your project is going to be a fine example of a Jeep restored to Military Specification, your attitude and attention to detail is already to paying off. When completed you are going to have a reliable and excellent example of a WWII Jeep. If you practice diligent PM and keep a sharp eye out for proper adjustment, noises and leaks, you will have years of trouble free turnkey operation. My daily PM is almost a "preflight" and it pays off.

Motor Stables type inspections on your own MV's is very important.
That fatality I mentioned earlier has resulted in negligence lawsuits. As a safety move in my local parades, all participants will have to have have annual motor vehicle inspection sticker and proof of insurance.
My state has a waiver on antique motor vehicles registrations as the state assumes restored motor vehicles are restored to original factory operating condition and the annual safety inspection is not required. Due to the fatality in a recent parade involving a city owned 30's fire truck (brake failure) and John Deere Tractor, it has been decided that all motor vehicles, antique or not, will have to display a safety inspection sticker and proof of insurance.in the local parade..
This was bound to happen as it is a well known fact that not all antique vehicle restorations are professional or in safe operating condition. My MV's have Antique plates and for the first time in over 40 years of safe operation, the three that may be in the Memorial Day Parade will all have previously waivered Inspection stickers. I used to solicit experienced MV drivers, that is no longer so as there is only one driver now and that is me.
Times have changed, all it took is one accident.

There is room for more, but I am content with the few I now have. I have been connected to Army trucks and Jeeps since the mid 40's and have owned restored running examples of WWII and M-Series 4X4 thru M-123 and the M-114.

Motor Stables 2018 completed, ready for duty. Which one is going into the Memorial day parade? Will do the"eenie meenie" thing Monday AM, the CCKW, much as I hate to, will sit this one out as I have two USAF type vets that will be happier in a Jeep.

Note how the 30 year old OD on the CCKW and MB has held up, the M-38A1 has a 4 year old coat of 50+ year old real GI Issue 24087 that shakes right up and makes the Jeep look new. Blue Drab still looks good after around 10+years. The Blue Drab matches the original GI Issue Blue Drab I have in WWII dated cans.
