30th YEAR- GOING ON 72 YEARS

Post by Joe Gopan » Wed Jan 02, 2013 1:45 pm

My 1941 SWB CCKW is entering its' 30th year in my collection. It was imported from Denmark in 1983. Part of the fun in owning this truck is the discovery of an NOS missing CCKW trinket even after 30 years.
This photo was taken during my daily visit while having a coffee and donut by Hangar 1 at DOW FIELD where thousands of B-17's, B-24's and other transient aircraft stopped on their way to and from the ETO and MTO. The first CCKW's convoyed to DOW from Camp Lee (Ft Lee) VA in June of 1941 when a Quartermaster Truck Company was assigned to support a bomber unit and the new personell that were being assigned to the new WWII base.

Well worth the wait!
I installed an Original WWII Pioneer Rack on my SWB Cargo Body several years ago, I preferred Leather Straps at the time but never got around to looking fo any until recently.

Even after 30 years a long sought after part appears and makes my 1941 CCKW happy.
The early WWII pioneeer racks used leather straps, these NOS 1" leather straps are GI Issue, close enough, and a lot closer than the postwar webbing that they just replaced.
It was 0 degrees F yesterday when I installed them.

It is all about patience as the original WWII small parts and accessories are no longer lining the shelves and bins of the depots and surplus parts stores. The excitement generated by a find is ageless.

How true of a project like yours ! :D ! An on-going project makes it FUN, a finished project could mean your looking for something else !! Piece by piece at your pace makes it a hobby, not a job. Great job Ben Dover, keep up the great work !! :D

I finally found an original Clamp-On Air Cleaner Cover that will allow installation of the original type Air Cleaner used with the early CCKW Die Cast Carburetor, thanks to good friend Frank von Rosenstiel. I have had the late type on my truck for years. Zenith made a Clamp-On Adaptor to allow installation of the late air cleaner as installed with the Cast Iron Carburetor.
It is always exciting when these trinkets surface.

Re: 31st YEAR- AND 73 YEARS OLD

My 2-1/2 Ton 6X6 Truck is now 73 years old, it was delivered May 1941. Am just as excited over it now as I was when it arrived from Denmark back in 1983. It was shipped as "roll on" freight on the S.S. Polaski from Rotterdam to Newark New Jersey. I paid $1350.00 plus $1200.00 for shipping thru Supreme Surplus in Metuchen, NJ. My family did business with Supreme from 1946 thru 1986. I bought and restored it to honor WWII Veterans with.

Thanksgiving is special day for my CCKW. It was shipped as Roll on Freight on the SS Pulaski and left Rotterdam destined for Newark New Jersey on Thanksgiving Day 1983, it took 10 days to arrive at Newark. Am thankfull for being able to buy the CCKW and to have known Seymore the owner of Supreme Surplus.
