1942 GPW 25212

Post by roblenzz » Thu Dec 11, 2014 5:13 pm

I posted this a little bit ago under the unrestored jeeps but it was only that way for a short time. I've already broken it down to bare bones and the frame is at the weld shop getting some rust repaired. It's amazing how fast these come apart and how slowly they go back together...

The story behind this jeep is that I have been after it for about 5 years or so, only having actually seen it a couple years ago for a few minutes. It was rumored that is was buried in a garage about 30 years ago and one thing led to another... the owner passed away, the roof colapsed on it and the wife (who is 87) did not want just any one poking around "back there in the garage" So, respectfully, over the next few years, I would stop in and ask about it and would sit and listen to her stories, help around the house and did some repairs to her Town Car... Through the years I have really enjoyed my visits with her and the jeep, although always on my mind, became just something sitting around back there, that eventually she may part with when the time was right. A few weeks ago that time was right and I got the call. We came to a price and I spent the day ressurecting it from certian doom. The roof formed a perfect funnel diverting all of the water and pine straw right into the tub floor causing it rot away. After a day of clearing a path and a very long winch cable I brought it out for the first time in over 30 years.

What I have is a 1942 Script Ford with the original data plates. Matching number frame and correct transmission and transfercase. The story behind the engine is that it was pulled out and sent to be rebuilt and it never came back. She told me that the engine was there and it went with the sale but what I found was an early 50s military generator with a L134 as the powerplant. I told her what it was and she said take it anyway... When I was able to view the jeep a couple years ago, the parts ie: starter, generator, associated odds and ends, were concentrated on the back wall of the garage which had since fallen over, scattering the parts in some vine over growth and a creek bank... I found what I could, loaded it up and that's where it starts...

Hi had seen you post on the Unrestored page nice to see you are progressing, I know exactly what you mean when you say
It's amazing how fast these come apart and how slowly they go back together...

A fellow enthusiast said i'd have it fixed in a year but knowing my spare time I said 5 or 6 years but I'm 12 years and counting at my 1944 MB but have a rolling tub again now, so some day i'll get a drive in it! Family are getting bigger and more independent so it is again progressing
Mine came out of a falling down tin shed too my floor was in a bad way but glad to say it is sound again now.
Please Keep the pictures coming and don't forget to look in on the previous owner too now you got your prize. :)
Just another UK jeep lover

Slowly but surely things are getting done. New bumper and front bumper gussets installed but noticed that I have about a 3/4" difference in height under my right front, rear spring perch than the other three. Gonna attempt to make a 4 point anchor system in the concrete and use a hydraulic jack to try and get it back to square.

Also I'm feeling more confidant in my welding abilities and have filled close to a hundred holes and large patches of rusted areas, making metal patch pieces to fit and grinding them into place.

Thanks a bunch. Today was spent welding up a hole in the hood where someone thought the air intake should poke through. Fixed the broken hinge and reinforced the rear rib that runs across the aft prortion of the hood

Here is the back panel. I think I am going to let some of her scars show through and use no bondo. Maybe just "all metal" on some of the real rough edges. I am not going for a "fresh off of the line" look.

Thanks for checking in on me. I am making progress. My apologies for not updating on here. Been taking apart springs and sandblasting for what seems like weeks on end...

About to get my axles blasted and bolted back to the frame. Combat wheels will be done any day now. Getting brake parts cleaned up and ready. Getting all of the body parts painted and bolted back on...
Slowly but surely

Thanks John

Getting brakes on and set up just waiting on new wheel cylinders. Found the wheels in the woods where the jeep was dug out. Combats were sandblasted, primered and painted.

A hard days worth of work but got them all assembled. This was a hurdle I have not been looking forward to.

I have one "show spare" original Goodyear.

Thanks Steve,
Tinkered on it over my weekend and made some good progress. Engine is not too far away from being dropped in. Here is the status tonight. Also picked up an M100... like I needed another project...

Hi Roblen,

Do you have your timeline? Maybe someone else's might help. Does you buddy or you have a ramp to lift the tub etc?

Regards

Steve
