Hi guys,

My winter holiday is gone, kids are satisfied spending a snowy week on mountain. I couldn't resist, i like my jeep and garage but family has priorities too.

I had just a few days on my parents place, so there is no so much time to do everything planned.
Radiator is ok now, was dissembled first, than cleaned checked and tinned again, should be still painted.

Image

Both fuel tanks are repaired, basically tinned. The guy who did the work simply resist to weld or use any other sealers except tin, so we will see how it will be.

Image

I begin with transfer case assembling.

Image

New oil seals are placed and sealed.

Image

Image

Shims are placed, bolts tighten with thread locker, so should be fine.

Image

Then I find a problem. Previously I measured the shafts, but I didn't really look intentionally. On right side of shaft you can see damage on bearing seating area, this one can't be used, it would be noisy, and bearing wouldn't last long for sure.

Image

Then I removed transmission from cj3-b, there was clutch problem, rattle sound when clutch is pressed and now i see why. Input shaft is eaten while pilot bearing is still ok?, I measured diameter roughly and it looks ok. I couldn't believe that pilot bearing (brass) is harder than input shaft? I am in doubt what can causing this, maybe clutch disc wasn't balanced or I have no idea what. Anyway both, pilot bearing and input shaft should be replaced.

Image

Looking topics with radios placed back on jeeps i got same idea, maybe for some occasions I could do the same. My father was radio amateur before so there are some radios on attic.
First one is post war Collins, and second is Russian I think wartime sender and receiver, but I couldn't find some data on web. I will post pictures latter.

Cheers!

Here is 51J4 Collins,

Image

and on second photo is Russian radio and sender. I have type markings on the box, and how I am told it was field type radio.

Image

However they are quite big and I think it would looks fine if it's placed back beside tool box.

Some parts are arrived, transmission case finally, seat cushions, tandem wipers... There is no more ordering parts, I will first assembled what I have, and then order what is still missing. I realize that repairing of old transmission case would be even more expensive than new one, so I will fix that one later. New transmission case is wof and looks good.

I found some info about my second radio. It is ww2 radio produced from 1942 -1945 by Pilot Radio Corporation, Long Island City NY. So not much Russian, it was kind of Land Lease contract between US and Russian allied army. This one pictured below is from 1944 and there is slightly difference, no clock, switches,... so my radio should be probably from 1945 or early one.
If you find this interesting, first link is in English http://www.rkk-museum.ru/vitr_all/exhibits/216_e.shtml
and second link can be quite good translated by Google. http://www.radionic.ru/node/3881

Hi everybody,

I spent a few weeks of my last vacation working on my jeeps again and result is quite visible. I had to go back a bit, changing front cross member and front bumper with new ones (md juan). Finaly, everything necessary for start up is on chassis, all except carburetor. I have to find one probably solex which is much easier to find here. So waiting for carb at the moment...

Then I continue with cj3b, sand blasting, cleaning... i found one crack under front cross member, that is solved, welded... new clutch is installed. I had to assemble transmission because input shaft is repaired, welded and machined again, I have no picture of that one.

This is how it looks now :-)

Next stage will be hopefully test driving of these chassis, I would like to check everything before bodies are mounted.

Greetings

Thank you for your support Tarsyn, those things taking it's time, a bit of hard work and enjoying of making something.
I think finish will be most difficult, with all those details which makes this work worthy and different.

Hi all,

Jeep is running again. First start was excellent, even without any ignition adjusting starting and running well. It was running in place and few rounds around were made, overall 1h. I have to say, it looks easy, but I am not advise this driving in any higher speed because it is quite easy to fall just in front of rear wheel.
Results are good for now, first and reverse gears are working properly, no strange sounds, only radiator is leaking. There is no leaking when engine is off, but in running condition it start leaking a bit. I made a new threads on studs under the radiator and during that work I feelt that radiator was twisted a bit so result is that leaking. I will have to open it again.

Bodywork,

Image

Old welds are drilled, time to take off hat channels,

Image

Here is almost separated from floor. Some sections of hat channels were already repaired before, that welds were grinded,

Image

Old wooden planks were still there,

Image

Finally taken off,

Image

Image

Image

Rear hat channel,

Image

Some sections were bought, the rest were made in local workshop,

Image

Preparation for placing of new piece of floor,

Image

Right in place, welded

Image

Image

Welds are grinded a bit, not fully flatten because it's underside of floor...not needed imho

Image

This kind of work should be straight forward, but it's not. Making of new patches, cutting of old pieces...it takes time and should be precise enough.

Moving on...

Question,

Do you know what is the purpose of those four holes on the left corner of my back panel?
I found one similar picture but still hole layout is not identical. I assume it can be antenna holder or maybe extra jerrycan strap plate but I am not sure.
Is it something maybe typical?
