Just looked at this. There should be a date cast into the block (below the starter). I'd like this for my data base. I expect it to be 07 - XX (with a chance that it could be 08 - X). If you ever pull the oil pan there will be a date stamped into the oil pan flange face near the rear bearing. That will tell when your engine was machined / assembled.
Thanks

Re: Found a Willys powered Generator
Not to hijack the thread, but what do have in your database?. My block is 5-3. The rail did not have a full date code, just 5-9, The block serial number matches the generator case.
I searched the entire pan rail with a magnifying glass, and that is all that was visible.
Thanks!!
Mike

Re: Found a Willys powered Generator
Hi,
I had one of these PU-58 G generator sets until recently.
I was told that the PU-58 puts out a "cleaner" electrical signal than the PE-95, thus making it suitable for use with radios.
Anyway, the problem with getting it to run may have to do with the set being designed to be operated remotely. Hence the oil and battery warning lights (presumably visible at night from a distance). There is a toggle switch on the lower right of the control panel which has the label "Hand Starting" or similar. That is a bit mis-leading to me as it implied getting the hand crank out to manually start the engine. However, it turned out to refer to starting the set not remotely, ie. press the start button on the control panel by hand. Hope this makes sense.
In the other position, the engine won't fire.
Took me a while to work it out!
Lets know what happens.
Have a nice day.
Sam, down-under.

Re: Found a Willys powered Generator
Checking the block casting date, the distributor date and the generator date might narrow the build date on that one.

Willys just made the engine. Onan and O'keefe & Merritt made the main units. I cannot any information at all about O'keefe & Merritt building generator units n the company history, only kitchen stoves. They built a lot of power units for the military, you''d think there would be a record or two somewhere.
