The engine shop that's working on one of my MB blocks has an "abandoned" M-38 block that they'd like to sell. I have seen this engine personally and it looks very nice...no cracks. Engine block has been boiled and checked for cracks. Serial number on the water pump boss is 37191 and the casting date on the block appears to be 12/20. There is also a number stamped on the upper left corner above the far left exhaust port: E9503. I believe it's currently bored at .060. The cylinder head has been boiled and shaved. The head casting number is 800376 with a casting date of 3/26. Comes with a very nice oil pan, camshaft, oil float, timing cover, timing gear and crank. I believe they have the connecting rods but I don't recall seeing them. The shop mentioned that the crank needs work. They are asking $600 for the engine and all the above listed components in their current condition. Keep in mind that they can finish the work for you right there.
Please contact Dave at (563) 324-1067 for more information. Block is located at Abraham's Machine Servive, Inc. in Davenport, IA. I simply offered to try to help him sell this block since they've been very accommodating to me with my '44 MB block.

Interesting; I live two miles from them. Wonder how and why it got abandoned? If anyone wants me to look at it for them I will. I spend a lot of time there anyway.

Why is there no MC prefix?

Looks like it was decked at one time to me. Removing the MC serial number.

I’m sure if someone was willing to make them a reasonable offer they would indeed entertain it. With all the post war blocks being scrapped these days I’d hate to see another one head to the smelters.

It's sad but I tried to give one like this away earlier this year; no takers.
