If I had space in my garage I'd jump on it at that price.

How can you tell the engine is not correct? From the pictures appears correct with the bypass hose anyway for the M38. John

Look at the way the block casting curves with the top of the water pump. Thats the first picture. that block casting went away late 45 ish. Should have big flat up there for the serial number, might also be a pre war block for the willys americar. without the casting number and serial number who knows what it is. The head is probably right for a M38, if I had to guess, its a post war military retrofit of a ww2 engine that somebody swapped in, but thats just a guess.

Maybe the lack of an oil filter housing is causing that look, but you may be correct. Take care, John

It was great to meet you FrankenJeep. "Willis" safely made it to his new home in Ohio. We woke up to snow here this morning, but he is warm and dry inside

He did not mention it. I bought it Saturday, and posted the information to answer questions. I also hope to learn as much as I can.

I'd love to know the casting date. I'd also like to know the machining date (stamped near the rear bearing) if you ever remove the oil pan.

Enjoy your purchase.

I will probably remove the oil pan sometime this year (gaskets and seals). Where should I look for the casting date? I am happy to share the info as I find it
