1953 Gas Tank Location
I just bought a 1953 M39A1 that did not have a gas tank. There is a hole in the back wall of the jeep where a rear fill tank was installed at one point. Also, the side wall right behind the driver's seat does have the hole for the side fill but it is had a metal plate covering it. My question is does anybody know if the rear fill was something that was added or were some of the jeeps manufactured that way? The side fill does have a plate covering the fill port, and it does look original. I would like to restore the jeep back to its original condition. Also, I do not know that the original color of the jeep was red. Somebody has painted over it with spray paint, but under the hood and the dash is red.

Re: 1953 Gas Tank Location
The rear fill gas tanks were a later design. Even the early CJ5's had the tank under the drivers seat and thats where the tank on your jeep should be located. On the color of your jeep, sand a spot down on it. You should find the original OD green under there somewhere. Unless someone actually took the time to sand it down to paint it. Typically that is not the case. Hope this helps you out.

Re: 1953 Gas Tank Location
Thanks for the information. I am going to put the gas tank back under the driver's seat. Also, it is nice to know that the red paint was not original either. So, I will restore the paint as well. Thanks again.
