1967 M38A1 Lubrication?

Post by lesk » Tue Jul 25, 2017 8:41 pm

Fairly new to G503 and I am sure this has been discussed many times before and as per many website responses are confusing and go against what is in the original manual for M38A1 lubricants but....here goes.

What oils/lubricants are used and recommended for a stock 1967 M38A1:

Motor oil?

Transmission & transfer case?

Axles?

Steering box?

And front wheel hubs/universals?

Regards,

I don't know the answers, but if I were you, I would get the TM's for that jeep. Then read them back to back, and when ever you have spare time.

I'm sure there are some M38A1 owners here, but check out the board that is for M38A1 jeeps only. You should get a lot of good advice.

Lubes are the same as the early jeeps; do a search and you will find what you are looking for. True, it is in your TM but oils have improved a little since 1967. Although you are in the wrong forum, this one gets about 100 times more activity than the M38A1 one.
Short answer, use GL4 in your transmission, GL 4 or 5 in your transfer and diffs, and rotella 15w40 in your engine. Grease your wheel bearings etc with a good modern wheel bearing grease; I use moly blend. Steering box do the research; it is a bag of worms. I pack them like wheel bearings with moly grease. Ain't had one fail yet. Others cringe at that.

I use John Deere corn head grease for the front steering knuckles - it's a grade 0 grease that is semi-flowable. The civilian lubrication manual for early CJ's recommends grade 0 grease for winter, grade 1 for summer. Don't know why the military went with grade 2 other than supply issues - maybe not having to stock a different grade of grease for just the knuckles? I also use it in the steering gearbox - I have to replace the seal one day because gear oil leaks out but the grease stays in place a lot better. There are other sources of lighter grades of grease if you don't have a Green store near you.
