My shovel doesn't fit!

Post by w30bob » Sun Apr 23, 2017 2:34 pm

Hi Guys,

Picked up a pioneer shovel at the meet yesterday and it fits perfectly in position under the hood. But when I go to close the hood it hits the rod running from the radiator support to the firewall. The shovel is a #2, Union Fork & Hoe, US made, metal handle, 37.5" long, bla, bla, bla....not some Chinese junker.......so what gives? Do I need to loosen up that radiator reinforcing rod and bend it down on that side? Is this just a "bend it 'till it fits" deal........or is there some spec for how much deviation from straightness to put into the rod?

thanks,
bob

Look in your TM at the rods and see if yours are installed as in the illustrations.
Why would you want a shovel in there, they usually rattle.

Hi Ben
My shovel don't seem to rattle.
At least I can't hear it over the Parking Brake Shoes!

I need to find time to get under there and correct my park brake. Have gathered up
Everything I need but Time!!

Thanks For Your Knowledge,
Tom

Brake rattle has been chronic with the M-38A1.

Yes, I have read that and I can understand why.

That fact that I only had two of the four flange bolts holding, and they were loose
When I got the jeep don't help.

I replaced the bolts but didn't realize the yoke and drum were bent.
I straightened them best I could ,but you get the idea.
It was really ready to fly apart. So now I need to start over with all the new
Parts I acquired.

The M35 has the same set-up only larger and they decided to add shoe springs
and a few others to help the problem I guess.
I know it's quiet !

The smaller brake on the Jeep gave it a lot of reason to rattle Having a lever with pins that are not worn along with shoes having holes that fit tight helps. I just ignore it and the rattle goes away.

Everyone can calm down now..........my shovel now fits!! Seems a previous owner installed the radiator support to firewall rods incorrectly.
Simply swapping right for left and flipping it over did the trick. All is good in the world again!

bob

Oh heck no. But I'm sure YOU could fill volumes with the things you've seen. And we'd love to hear 'em.

I think Joel just needs to write a book about the M38A1 with all the tips and tricks he's learned over the years with his past military service. I think that would be awesome!

MASH,

I'd buy a Copy! It's a bit odd that with all the MV books out there there's no real good book on the M38A1. I asked David Doyle last year if he was working on one....but he wasn't. Odd.

Regards,
Bob
