M38A1 Rebuild Help Wanted Please?
Hi, This is my first restoration project and I'm having a few problems,
Could someone please post or send me photos of the engine mounts that should be on this jeep? I bought it partly dismantled and the engine is still in the chassis but seems to be sitting too high and when I put the air intake on the bonnet won't close. I have looked at the engine mounts and they are definitely some kind of bodged affair. I Really need help to sort this out and it would be much appreciated if you could help???
I'm also having problems identifying the engine which has the number P41409B
The Chassis 73284
Vehicle id Number 2062858
Do These numbers tie up and make sense to anyone???

Perhaps if you post a few pics of your jeep it would help. Usually the M38A1 had a good amount of under hood clearance for the engine so its hard to tell where your problem begins and ends. You could start by going to the Willys M Jeeps http://www.willysmjeeps.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; site and downloading all the manuals for your jeep - parts and maintenance manuals. They are in the "Downloads" section. Then you can trace your clearance problems. Your engine serial number (engraved on the flat above and behind the water pump) should start with "MD" - Willys designation for the M38A1.

Definitely need some photos.
The M38A1 has a side draft carburetor with the air cleaner mounted to the firewall and connected by a hose. There is plenty of clearance under the hood (bonnet). Does your Jeep have the 4 cylinder Hurricane engine installed or has it been replaced with a different power plant?

The M38A1 has a down draft carburator only the airhorn is angled at 90 degrees.The M38A1 has a side draft carburetor with the air cleaner mounted to the firewall and connected by a hose.

From the pix it looks pretty much correct. . What in particular do you think is "Bodged"? If you are wondering about the rods flopping around in the front mounts those support the radiator and identify it as probably dating from 1952-3.
The carburetor looks correct as does the cross-over tube. The M38A1 used the Carter YS 950 S. Do you have an air cleaner for it?
I see it has a power take-off installed. What does it connect to?
It looks like a nice Jeep and you are doing a very nice job of restoration. What kind of shape is the body in?

Everything looks like it is supposed to for a M38A1 engine installation. But you didn't post pics of the body. By any chance are you trying to install a M38 (flat fender) tub? The M38 didn't have the "streamlined" raised hood of the M38A1 and there isn't enough clearance for the F-head engine. The M38 used the L-head or flat head engine.
