Hello: I purchased a zerk fitting and pumped several times into the fitting on my M38. The release valve on both sides are free. Why would I not see it lift a little? Should I continue to pump some grease into the fitting? Thank you John

Pump very slow as it takes very little pressure to blow grease past the inner and outer seal, especially the outer seal as it is most likely the felt type and not neoprene as used in later years. If your bearing is dry it will take extra grease. Pump very slow to prevent pressure that will blow the seal Just pump until the head on the valve starts to lift and stop. You can lift the head of the valve with your thumbnail. You can alsi remove the valve with a wrench and stick a Q-Tip in there to get an idea if there is grease on the way.
The reason for the urgent MWO to remove the fitting was that non Jeep trained mechanics and drivers were pumping too hard and blowing the seals and ruining brake shoes, or just greasing the bearing too often.
I have NOS valves.

Remove the vent stick a Q-Tip in to get a sample of what may be in there.

Bought the grease fittings from Mr. Dover and installed them yesterday... Don't know when the wheels were last greased but I have pumped a fair amount of grease into the fittings with no movement of the top fitting. Should I be looking for a problem or should I just keep pumping till it moves the fitting moves. Do not know how many pumps I gave it, but the over greasing advise makes me nervous. Henrydes

I can't stress how important this PM is, and do not over grease these bearings.

It;s time to remember this service. I only drive my M-38A1 a few hunderd miles a year and just grease these two fittings every 4-6 years due to the reduced mileage.
