My department head was an eighteen year old in the Engineers. He was put on detail waterproofing Jeeps just prior to D-Day.
I wish I had spent more time with him discussing his WWII experience. Like many WWII Veterans he would make a rare passing remark about being in the service, just bits and pieces. He happened to see my MB at work one day in the late 70's and it touched the waterproofing remark.
