Post by YLG80 » Mon Dec 05, 2011 8:07 am

Here are a few pictures of WWII Jeep's.
These pictures were shot on Sept 1944 (from 7 to 11) in the VIIth Corps HQ of General Lawton Collins (Jayhawk) in Belgium.

Yes it looks like .

They have left many Jerrycans (full!) like the one on the picture (I've about 30 jc like that !). Most of them are dated from 42 or 43 and are British.
Two of them are US (QMC gas and water).

On one picture you can see where they were refueling their vehicles. (my favorite Jeep picture).
There is still a German pump (yes they were here just before the US army arrived) and several 200l cans from the Whermacht.
So it was convenient for the US troops to use the same installation.
I've used one of the last jerrycan of gas last year in my mower. We used to clean our brushes after painting with that gas.
That 1944 gas smelt a lot and the color is "strain yellow". :D

What is the wording in the 1st picture, upper right side of top:

Caution
This vehicle is
Left hand drive

If so, would that surmise that the top has been in use since before the invasion?

Dirt covered, or painted in another color than white?

Jeff

Yes they came from the UK :
[from the Battle log]
June 14 - First elements of the battalion landed on Utah Beach and proceeded to dewaterproofing area about 1200 hours.

On the Jeep, this is for sure dirt and mud.
The battle log shows that they they had covered about 150 miles in one week, mostly on unpaved roads in 1944.

From the log Battle of Colonel John J. Hayes( 172th FA) :
September 1 - Moved. to new position one mile West of St. Croix, France.
September 2 - Moved to new position three miles Northwest of Bosmont, France.
September 3 -Moved to new position northeast of Papleau [Papleux], France. Battalion informed that American Advance Troops are now in Belgium.
September 4 - Moved to new position one and one half miles Northeast of Fraire, Belgium, Crossed Begium-France Border at 1900 hours . Enthusiastic Welcome given by the Belgium
people. BFI were very much in evidence and had many Jerry prisoners.
September 5 - Remained in same position Battery "C" captured twenty-five prisoners including one officer. Some resistance was met and patrols were sent out. Private Rouse, Battery "C", was
killed in this action.
September 6 -Moved to new position one and one half miles southwest of Buzet,Belgium.Service Battery captured twelve prisoners and Battery "C" captured one German Major
just prior to movement from Fraire.
September 7 -Moved to new position two miles North of Fosse, Belgium. Battalion temporarily converted into Security Guard for VII Corps.

That means about 150 miles in one week, mostly on unpaved roads in 1944.
