Fun in the Sun! The old DTC/CAMA is my favorite location for pokin' around with the jeeps!

My guess is that the location is probably either the Rice Valley dunes near Camp Granite and Rice Army Airfield or near Camp Pilot Knob, (near the Glamis dunes).

The mountain ranges in the background would need to be studied to know for sure!

Here's a map of the training area:

I'll 2nd Camp Piolot Knob. I was born and raised in Brawley and went all over those dunes in the 50's.

There was a brilliant series of articles many years ago In the MVPA publication Army Motors on the Desert Training centres and Camps.
I think it was by Francis Blake? It spanned many issues and covered past and present time frames.

Francis Blake's articles were very good! I'm hoping to get back out there again with the GPW before it gets too hot. I usually go to the areas around Camp Granite, Palen Pass, Rice airfield and Camp Iron Mountain.

I would NOT be driving around in that sand without eye protection!

Driving in the desert sand without glasses, next your going to say the rode bikes without helmets......some forget training for war is most often dangerous, and can't be done in a sterile environment properly

There were goggles issued for that type of environment. My eyes seem to attract sand and things. I was once riding my motorcycle (without a helmet--let those who ride decide!) and was within one mile of home. It was just about dusk and I didn't have my nighttime riding glasses with me. I took my sunglasses off and in less than 30 seconds, a bug flew into my eye! :x That's why I wouldn't be driving in that sand without eye protection.
