Starter for an m38

Post by chucks_toy » Mon May 01, 2017 1:32 am

I have a 1952 m38 MC engine serial number MC33852 that the previous owner rebuilt. This is a 12 volt system. When he rebuilt it he put a 124 tooth flywheel on it with a early bellhousing with the built in support bushing for the starter. I am having a problem of going through starters. I am looking for information on a high torque starter that will work with this system. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Chuck,

I don't think you will find one. Might try the early CJ3A small frame starter rewound for 12V. Might be easier to go with a 97 tooth flywheel and look for a 12 volt hi-torque for the WWII jeep. Otherwise you'll have to go with the later bell housing for the big frame starter and the 129 tooth flywheel.
