Parting out 62 Willys station wagon 4wd

Post by suregrip413 » Thu Feb 25, 2016 4:09 pm

A friend of mine has left over parts from a 62 station wagon. It had the Tornado 6 in it. I got a T 90 and the transfer case from it. My question is I can also get the compete axles front and rear, tire to tire and the bell housing. Is this the same bell housing as on my M 38 and M170 ? Are these axles worth taking home for spare parts? Thanks.

62 Wagon should have had the 226 6 Cyl Super Hurricane. 6 Cyl Bell Housings do not mate with 4 Cyl. The T-90 Main Drive Gear used with 6 Cyl is longer and have to be changed to the short 4 Cyl. version.

Larger Brakes, longer axles, different Steering Gear, depending on front and rear gear ratios the Ring and Pinion assy's may or may not be of use.

My M38 has 9 inch brakes all around. I was wondering if these were the same and worth keeping? They are free, looking for a good home before they are scrapped. Ty.

The 6-226 Wagon and P.U. had 11" X 2" Brakes, little Jeeps used 9".

I have not done this [just disc brake conversions] but have read on G503 about folk that have converted different Willy's 10/11" set ups & if the 11" set you have access to bolts up, it would be an superb improvement over the current 9" system on your M38 especially if they are the fixed anchor arrangement. By '62 Jeep you should be up to a fully self energizing & self adjusting system as well.
Here is someone selling what it seems you can get for free....a no-brainer as they say.

Understand how system parts interact with one another. GOOD parts can then be established & the NOT GOOD problem/s part/s isolated for repair or replacement.

Not a bad idea for Jeeps that require increased braking capacity, problem is that the used 11 X 2 drums may not be in reuseable condition if the truck or wagon was driven to death.
