rear seat

Post by old man » Tue Aug 15, 2017 6:31 pm

well we are making progress getting the Mutt up and running properly. I'm having problems figuring out the rear seat. I put in in the holders, and snap the back in place but as soon as someone sits on it the the front edge of the seat drops to the floor.
now that I have replaced the master cylinder, seals o on the transmission and installed new shocks we are out on the road testing. in 4th gear at about 40 to 45 it seems to run out of power, the best I can describe it is like going up a hill in to high of gear and it dogs down. is this how they react when you hit the upper limits of the speed you can drive it?
found a few other things when I was installing the master cylinder but I will save them until I can get a few photos of what I found.
on the good side I was at a show last week end and found the parts of the heater that I was missing plus a full heating unit. also found the missing windshield pump parts I needed.
I should have it correct by the time I put it away for the winter

It sounds like you are using an A1 rear seat in an A2. The A2 seat has legs in the front of the seat that the A1 seat does not have. The A1 seat sits on brackets on the sides of the fenderwells to support the front of the seat. As far as the power going up hills, unless it is a really steep hill you should have no problems, it sounds like maybe the power valve or main jet passage is partially clogged. Are all of the tune up specs set correctly? Valve clearance, timing are critical. Is this an A1 or A2?

what you are saying makes sense. the seat frame is what I received when I bought the Mutt, I didn't know that was the wrong frame.
this is an A2 with a fording kit on it. I will have to check the tune up specs. again. Still learning a lot as I go here. thanks so much for all the help in is much appreciated.

You will need an A2 rear seat, timing should be set right on the line on the pulley and valves are .015 . Make sure your choke is set so that it opens all the way when the cable is pushed all the way in. I have seen a lot of them adjusted so the choke will not open all the way and this will cause a lack of power at high rpm. Check the oil level in the air cleaner also.

FWIW, a long time ago, like the early 1980s to be exact, I purchased a cut M151A1. It was missing the brackets that the seat rests on. I mentioned this to Phil Nelson (Nelson's Surplus Jeeps, Columbiana Ohio) on one of my very frequent Saturday visits. Phil reached into an area of his parts stash and handed me a package to solve my problem. This was a kit, consisting of 2 M151A2 Seat Legs to be welded on my M151A1 seat. Over the years, I've always been amazed at the unique parts that Phil has squirreled away.

Someone with a small tubing bender could make them, there is nothing special about them. Everything else with the seat is the same.

David a few years ago I believe I bought a top and some straps from you at the old Iola show, I can't say enough how happy I have been with your work, thank you. I do remember someone there telling me if I needed any webbing to go see the pizza man at the show. and again thank you for the information.

Rick I do have a hydraulic tubing bender, but I do not have anything to use for a pattern for the legs.

Thanks to everyone for all the help, it is very much appreciated.

I have an A2 rear seat frame (no cushions) that you can have for free. It is in good shape, rust-free, but is painted gray. I see you are in MN. Only problem us getting it to you. I live in PA.

Yes they do. I have found that some small stores in little towns don't do it though.
