ROPS KIT

I'm new to this board . I just found a mint M151A2 in a barn not far from where I live that I am about to purchase . I would like to know does anyone know where I can find a complete ROPS kit, or do you know a link for someone that sells them ?

Welcome! Now, more about your barn find please.

ROPS kits are available from TNJ Murry and a few others. Best place would be the 'for sale' sections of the various MV boards, g838, Steel Soldiers, and even ebay.

Try to find a Canadian ROPS, They are much less body invasive as far as damage to the body.

Where are you located? I have one but its just the bars and feet. Its in great shape and I do not believe it was ever mounted. No belts or netting.

Do yourself a favor and consider NOT installing a ROPS.
Drive it safely and sanely and there is no need.
Have had two A2s with ROPS and both were removed at restoration and scrapped.
To Ricks point the Canadian ROPS were far less destructive to a vehicle but I doubt you will ever find one complete.

Since i'm here , what would I need to get as far as spares for this vehicle ? I'ts not going to be driven everyday , but it will be driven enough to keep everything lubed and charged . I guess what i'm asking what wares out that would be good to have on hand for a just in case situation ?

I found it through a friend of mine . I contacted the owner , went to go look at it . It is a 1970 M151A2 with little to no rust , uncut , no rust in the body on top and just a touch of rust underneath . It will need some cosmetic work and maybe a little mechanical work but nothing major .
When I can I will post some pics of it, maybe some of you guys can educate me on it .

That is sort of like asking what brand of oil to use at a NASCAR race. :roll: :lol: Well, there are several things that are known to be problems on 151's besides rust. U-jounts are a biggie since there are 12 of them on the vehicle and none of them are available over the counter. Coils are a real hard item to find NOS and the aftermarket chrome ones are beyond junk, half of them (no exaggeration here) do not work out of the box. Swiss controls electronic ignition units are the same as the coils, try to find NOS. Spark plugs are getting harder to find but you will not need tons of them. Other than that most everything else is readily available.

Really cannot emphasize this enough, if you want one with ROPS, trade it to someone with ROPs equipped setup.
They are too rare without ROPS and butchering a good body is just well, dumb.... :(
ROPS adds a lot of weight above center of gravity, it was not needed if the driver understood this is not a speed demon in the turns. The suspension was designed for off road and not highway speed. That said, it will be your jeep, but I would hate to see you spend so much effort on such an ill thought out modification made by dumb Gov types even as the vehicle was scheduled for replacement. (by a vehicle which rolls over just as much.. :oops: .)

I have an A1 and do not have the ROPS on mine. That said, I have raced cars my entire life and the reason I have lived this long is because of roll cages. Granted the M-151 got a bad reputation for rolling over and most of it was due to poor driving more than the design of the vehicle BUT, What if you are on the road and someone h8its you and turns you sideways? One of our own members, George from Holland can attest to this. He was tapped and turned and flipped at speed. George was very lucky and escaped with some road rash because the antenna bracket miraculously held it up enough for him to squirt out as it went over, and he was also lucky enough not to be run over by other cars. While I am totally against butchering a vehicle (hence the Canadian suggestion), I am in favor of the cage if you are taking the family out. It is not always about how YOU are driving.

Now, You can take an American ROPS and modify it to eliminate cutting the big holes in the body. Just cut the rear down tubes 5/16 short of the rear fender and weld them to plate steel which gets bolted to the fender and backed up underneath with another plate. That way there are only four bolt holes. There are some things you do with the plates to eliminate shearing the fender in a roll.

But Rick that could happen in my GPW, the Command Car or any historical vehicle...they don't have ROPS and would look out of place with them.
ROPS limits displaying the MUTT to the very end of it's service life, and most of that was Admin runs as the HUMVEE came into the field replacing it. With exception you won't find it in combat photos with a ROPS unless it's a cutup version with modified suspension for SF folks, etc.
1'st mutt I bought (A1) had a rollbar in it and the guy had flipped it crushing his leg under the windshield. He was "taking a hard right turn at 15mph in sand" .... :shock: I paid $1500 for it and unmodified the MUTT of all the non-issue items 1st thing. If stability is desired, do the underbody suspension 3-4 chain link weld up mod which limits the amount of body roll. This was at least done by several in service mait shops.
To each his own, I say trade it for a ROPS equipped vs destroying an excellent display piece.

Thanks for all the info guys. After careful consideration I think I will leave it alone and original . I will only be using this vehicle for Viet Nam displays and maybe some re enactments and parades . I was looking at it as a safety thing .
