Locking Cargo Hatch Latch

Post by dilvoy » Thu Sep 08, 2016 12:03 pm

The age old problem..... How to lock the rear latch for the Cargo Hatch on a Weapons Carrier. I've been thinking about doing this for years and someone asked me about it so I've finally done my version of it. It actually was pretty easy and I didn't mess anything up doing it either. Anyhow, I got a simple Mail Box type lock and used it to obstruct a movable portion of the latch assy in the same way that it is done on the locking latches for the X Doors. There is a bit less room to work with so I had to place the lock hole where I had to do a tiny bit of grinding to one side of the lock bezel so it would sit flat. This was to allow complete movement of the lock mechanism when it was in the open position. In the end, I started drilling the hole slightly off center, but it's close enough for me.

I started with a small drill bit and went up until I had to switch to a file. I broke off a rat tail file and put it in a drill driver and used that to open up the hole to the correct size for the lock to almost pass through. I then used a small rat tail file to finish up the hole manually. The lock is placed so when in the fully open position, the flat steel piece can fully extend and still not contact the body of the lock. This item is what needs to be blocked from moving to lock the latch. The lock is actually too tall to do the job at this point. If the latch had a drop down area like the locking X Door Latches do, this would be perfect, but I can modify the movable part of the lock so it drops down to do the job. I will make this lock work, because I want the key to match my locking latches on my X Doors.

George good project. I see how you used the lock what did you use to slide up into the handle to lock it in?

Hi Robert. I just drilled a hole in the swiveling part of the lock and installed a bolt with a nut to hold it in place. It drops down far enough to block the sliding part of the latch assy. It works really well. I have made two so far.

Hi Robert, I see that you fabricated the step which would have been part of the stamping if they had made it to be lockable. Saves having to shape the lock rim to sit flat against the body. Here is how I solved the "too high" problem.
