Anyone ever remove or change cross bar behind the driver and

Post by DockRocker » Sun Nov 29, 2015 6:21 pm

I know that the cross bar is somewhat structural as it gives support to the rockers but the civi units do not have the. I think they have some rocker protection built in from what I have read.

If you were to removed the cross bar it would open up a whole new world of seating options. Some reclining suspension seats would be awesome up front. Has anyone ever attempted anything like this?

It would probably be ok if removed from the drivers side only if you had a hard top which would stiffen things up all around.
The Civi ones that are not there also have the batteries located under hood.

It would make a diff to remove from the pass side anyway, the seat sits on the battery box...unless you did a full conversion and moved batteries to under the hood as an H1 does.
Simple not worth it IMO. But the brace being cut on the drivers side should be fine....till you get T-boned.

Mine was cut out on both sides when I got it, I moved my batteries under the passenger rear seat and installed the adjustable high back driver bases on both sides, makes it pretty comfy. I have the slantback top with turret support and have never noticed any problems in rigidity

Yes they did make a kit. You do not remove the cross bar. The part kit was a chunk of aluminum that had the same shape/angle as the rear of a high back seat. You cut a part of the brace away and this part bolted to the cross bar. This allowed you to move the seat all the way back. The part filled in the cross bar and was braced against the trans tunnel and the door post. I found this kit from a Hummer dealer. I used to have a part number but lost it. If i remember it was a "B" Pillar modification kit. Do not cut that brace out!!!!

I have one of these and I don't believe it is aluminum. Looks like brass or a brass alloy. Way to heavy for aluminum. I'd post a pic, but I don't have picture hosting, so if anyone needs pics, shoot me a pm.

Does anyone have pictures of this modification of this bar or ideas? I am installing NOS Commanders seats.

I needed an extra inch or two of rearward travel to be comfortable with the commander seat configuration. After review of the structural requirements and my safety in the M998, I cut half of it out, welding it back overlapping the remaining piece and boxing it in. Same amount of material, giving me the dimensions I was looking for. Work well of me.

Since it's built like a Corvette (center frame rails) as long as you fashioned some side protection to take a hit (what most NTSB complaints are for mil vehicles other than air bags and bumpers) then you should be fine with body modifications.
I wonder when someone's going to rebody a humvee with a Vette outer shell....
I suppose it could be titled as a Vette (Wide Body) and skip the off road use only if the VIN migrated with it....

I just had to install the b pillar cross bar in an H1 and let me tell you what a major job that was. Don’t cut it out if you have it.
