Home Brew 12" Brake Rotor Install

Post by dilvoy » Wed Dec 10, 2008 4:48 pm

Here are some fotos of the installation of the 12" Humvee Brake Rotos onto the front end of my "Classic" Humvee. They can't just be installed without some work, because they will contact the front of the rear of the two Forward Frame Crossmembers. On my Humvee, the Differenteal needed to be spaced 3/8" forward to stop any interfereance problems with the Rotors. I did this by making some spacers to use at the Pinion end of the Differential and by slotting the mounting holes of the supports that the Diff Brackets attach too. I made some reinforcment plates to support that area as well. I then had a bit of a problem installing the Left Front Brake Caliper. It just barely woulden't slip into place, because of interfearance with the back side of the Forward Frame Crossmember. I fixed this by pulling out the trusty old grinder and removing the raised boss that is part of the casting of the the caliper. This boss extends further out than the main body of the Caliper so I'm not worried about any diminished strength. The Right Hand Caliper had plenty of room because of Differentials angled positioning.

Overall foto.

I don't know what that extra wire is for yet. It is part of the A2 main body harness so it must have a usage. When I power up the vehicle I'll be able to figure out if it is a ground or a hot wire and when it may be hot.

If he has 12" brakes, then he used the bracket in upper area....lower one is regular 10".
