5 years of saturdays for mods and fabrication. Video snips below. Crank up the volume for the diesel sound.

This was not a resto candidate; no motor; bent frame and stripped of many parts, and a fairly mangled body tub.

Turbo boost is noticeable. Its got a new VW 1.9 AAZ long block and a modified injection pump from Giles Perf. in Canada.
It uses a AX15 and dana18 with 3:1 gears. All blended together with Acme and Novak adapters. I upgraded the rear halfshafts (Spicer yoke sleeve 2-3-8021KX; yoke shaft 2-82-201X). Disc brakes were not too difficult to adapt with wilwood rotor hats and surfacing of both the hats and stub axle surfaces on the diffs. Still have a few months of debugging & details.

Nice job. I'll take it. How much? I have been watching your progress on it. Very good work, love the color. I bet you are glad to see it up and running. Enjoy driving it for a few day, before I go pick it up. :lol:

Way to go Mark!

Excellent craftsmanship on the TD Mite.. M422a2 (or maybe a3) conversion :) very nice indeed.

I trust well be seeing you with it at Tower...

If we try a little we should be able to have a pretty nice Mighty MIte roundup there....

Hopefully this time you can get there a little earlier....we need time drool over your rig!

A short progress update on the debug and commissioning of the turbo diesel mite. Nearly ready for a desert camp trip. Plan to run with no top or full winter top. Really needs the top and side curtains to keep the diesel fumes tame. Summer top alone sucks in too much fumes from the rear.

Gotta get done with this one to do the body paint, wiring and tub install on the resto mite.

Cooling - the off the shelf radiator was marginal, pulling 205F or peaking to 210F on hills, and the fan turned on too frequently at speeds where airfow should have been sufficient. Bit the bullet and ordered a custom aluminum radiator that is taller, thinner 2-core, hangs lower, all the way down to the bellcrank spider and takes advantage of 'air holes' in the front bumper. It uses one of the m151 style bumper conversion kits from DL B that was shortened. The electric fan is now a variable speed brushless SPAL unit, 16" size. Now it holds steady to t-stat temps, 185-190.

Front driveshaft was howling and vibrating in 2WD at anything over 35 mph. It now has a double-ended CV on both ends. but a skinny 1.25" spline shaft, like automatic transmission CJ-7's. That brings the total to 16 u-joints/Repezzas in the driveline.

Still need to replace the modern master cylinder, its go a slow transfer leak between front and rear sections, and eventually overflows the front fluid reservoir. It runs an electric accumulator style boost for the front discs.

SWEET!

I wonder if a fording kit type exhaust pipe would keep you from smelling the diesel exhaust fumes so much?

The electric boosted brakes, are they '87-'90 XJ Bendix ABS parts?

Negative on the problematic Jeep XJ Bendix. I needed a booster with disc brakes and added weight. The mite has little room left for a booster with rear facing frame mounted master cylinder. I needed to relocate reaward to clear the new rear cross-member. i did not want a hydroboost, too long anyway. The booster and cylinder set-up is from ABS power brake co. Thay have several cylinder offerings. The pump and acculumulator appear the same as used on Jags and GMs. The master cylinder is their own design, set up just for boost, no ABS. Its a snug fit.

The accumulator looks like an XJ one.

I made a lot of $$$ at the Jeep dealer working on the XJ system back in the day, with all the recalls and extended warranty, etc. Not hard to work on actually, once you did a few!

A reference on radiator size for anyone contemplating a watercooled engine. Here is rev-1 on the radiator, ~30% more surface area, and hangs down to the bellcrank. Now runs a brushless 16" variable speed fan. Modified the retrofit M151 style bumper, again, for airflow and then recoated along with the rims. The ugly aluminum angle is needed to strengthen the bottom of the grille; it was thinned to clear the steering gear and radiator.

That is one really neat rig. Some great engineering there.
I like that machine, looks to be fun to drive.
