The Bustle Basket... the GI Solution For Added Stowage

Post by NormD » Wed Feb 24, 2016 6:35 am

Thanks Doug for your suggestion.
Here is the Bustle Basket, a reproduction based on a WW2 photo of an actual design but this one is made of aluminum. I use a combination of 1/2" square stock, 1/4" flat stock from 3/4", 1 1/4", to 1 1/2", as well as assorted angle pieces. But a picture is worth a thousand words, see below. It comes in four sections, 2 sides, a bottom, and a back. All hardware provided is stainless steel ... no rusting.
To mount it simply walk up to the back of the jeep and hook it into place. You do not need to remove the spare or the gas can. However, I do provide mounting hardware. It bolts to the rear fender wells just to the outside of the rear-panel seam.
The upper rear cross bar comes pre marked for you to drill and tap the mounting holes for footman loops. If you have a top you can secure it to the basket. Now you can put your top up or down in 2 minutes. In the down position you can simply wrap the canvas around the bows and lay it on top of the basket. The cost of the basket is $265.00 + S/H.
Photo 1: Open Top secured to basket and Bows laying on Basket.
Photo 2: Basket in use in the field.
Photo 3: Basket is loaded.
Photo 4: Rolled Canvas is stowed on Basket

Norm's basket was just what the doctor ordered. He was great to work with, and I definitely feel I got my money's worth. I haven't drilled the holes out yet for the footman loops because I'm waiting on hardware.

Hi Chance,

You did a great job on the installation and thanks for the plug. Your going to love it once you install the footman loops.

Just to let you know that I will be at the East Coast Military Vehicle Rally to be held at Aberdeen, Maryland, May 12th thru the 14th. The products I make constitute some of the modifications that the 106th Cavalry Group made to their jeeps during the war. You can see them first hand on my jeep. It will be on display there. If you come to the show, please stop by and say Hi.

Hi Chance, Sorry I didn't take any pictures at Aberdeen. My wife says I've got enough photos of the jeep and military vehicles to paper the house. Have you gotten to install the footman loops on the basket yet? If you haven't done so already, when you do, drill and tap the holes so you don't have to worry about the screws extending into the stowage area and the top rail across the back of the basket remains smooth.

I haven't been able to do that yet, no. Job change recently... Now working to get transmission and transfer case sand blasted for rebuild. I have been wanting to buy a tap and die set, so this is as good a reason as any. If I tap the holes do I then need shorter screws? I am guessing so. I've already bought the footman loop screws and nuts to mount.

You can install round headed screws from the back side and simply put the nuts on the footman loop side. Hardware stores may have the little trim washers that would allow you I use the flathead screws from the backside, too. Either way, it would be snag free.

Hi Chance, Longer screws are not a problem. They can be shortened by using one of those wire-stripping tools (pliers) that have about 1/2 dozen different size stripping holes. Those tools also contains about four screw cutting holes. One side of the plier has threaded holes and the other side has the cutting edge. I'm certain that the screw size that fits the footman loops will thread into one of those cutting holes. You have to open the pliers so the holes line up. Place the screw into the threaded hole and screw it through the aligned hole on the other side. Once you reach the proper length screw that you need, squeeze the plier closed and it cuts the screw. Then by screwing it out the tool cleans up the thread and it is ready to use. Hope this helps.

I know what you're talking about Norm - but I never knew what it was for until now. I'm gonna cut me some screws later and try it out.

Chance....

If you can find some 1970s GM pickup truck taillights or something similar that can be mounted in each of the upper corners and put in 6volt bulbs you can plug them into the trailer socket on your jeep. That will make it much easier for traffic behind you to see you are stopping/slowing down. Wire them for STOP and TAIL lights, both sides the same. You then don't have to worry that people behind you can't see your jeep taillght which may be obscured by any cargo in the bustle basket.

Early YJ Wrangler lights are the same type, nice and large, with a reflector built in. Also some have a lit side lamp and side reflector. They have a four wire weather pack connector, which includes the ground, some lamps with three wires will need the base grounded.

Local auto parts or truck parts stores usually have a bin of them, under $25, usually. The left one will have a license lamp, too, required in most states.

Often you can find someone parting out a YJ or late CJ and get them cheap on craigslist. If you are running turn indicators, you can swap in an amber bulb into the reverse light section.
