WW2 Jeep Anti Theft Device
Hi All,
When I purchased my MB it had an extra safety strap eye bolt as shown in the photo & it had me stumped as to "WHY" well a WW2 Vet spotted it & told me it was fitted by some American units to stop their Jeep getting stolen by others.
Made sense to me, just add a padlock (the one I piut in is a little long but ok for this purpose) & although the Jeep can be started & driven in reverse it would stop a high speed get away.
Hope you like it & it is what I was told it is.

Hi Paul,
My Jeep apparently was not on Aussie issue at least during the early years of the war but I wouldn't bet either way.
Interesting yours has the same thing, well the old guy who told me what it was used for had part of it right.
Probably doesn't matter who fitted them, & knowing fellow Aussies & Americans not wanting their vehicles pinched I can see a genuine use for this.
Something a little different.
Stay safe mate.

lock
Here's how I do it:
I feed a short length of chain over the dash board center lower support then lock it around the shift rod that's in reverse. No altering the dash which I like.
That support channel has little sides along the length so, when I want to drive, I reattach the lock on the chain (both ends to form a loop) then spin the lock around so it sets on top of the support channel. Out of sight and out of mind but close when I need it.

I did the same as you guys. But I couldn't think of where to keep the padlock when not in use because it would rock around on the dash eyebolt. So I cut down a leather tape holder and fixed to the side.
Actually - I'd like to get rid of the key completely and rig up a transponder like the new Harleys use to start their bikes.
This might be tricky on 6 volt !

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for posting the photos & the ideas, I do have a U.S lock but just one key which I have to take to a lock smith & get another made, so when I actually get around to using this I will have the correct lock.
Something a little different in this topic for a change.

Lock
I been wondering how to keep my Jeep-s safe and since one is a Rat Rod type used for the cattle I'll now us a padlock from a set I use on the gates.
The GPW will use a lock from my Mil Days, that Uncle Sam provided.
Thanks
Lots of good ideas here.

Fuel Cell
This may be asking too much but has anyone used a Racing Fuel Cell as a safer way than setting on a Bomb.
Both fuel Tanks are missing, on my GPW and the M38 (Bad case of OD Green latly).
The GPW will sooner or later get the correct tub and tank but for now I'm going to see about a Fuel Cell mounted under the rear.
Then, I'll leave it when I do the up grade and add a manual fuel valve for tank selection but never use the underseat tank unless really needed.
The beater M38 will most likly "live" with the fuel cell as long as I own it but at least it will be a runner ans preserved for someone else to finish later.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Stolen Jeep
Yes, I know of two that were stolen from rural areas never to be found.
Of course one was proven to have been loaded on a flat bed trailer and the other was driven across a pasture and we think, loaded into a trailer of some sort.
So even locking the gear shift might not help.

This possibly does not have a lot to do with the topic of the postTanker Dawson wrote:This may be asking too much but has anyone used a Racing Fuel Cell as a safer way than setting on a Bomb.

Anti theft devise
Thanks for posting the pictures of this modification. Great Idea. I put a in line fuel shut of petcock/valve on the gas line just below the gas tank. Park my jeep turn the valve and no gas goes to the motor. No gas no go. Kinda a pain to remeber to open it back up so I can drive away.

Theft prevention
Although not a jeep a fuel valve shut off as well as an electric fuel pump with switch did in fact save my 1963 Spitfire while I was stationed in Hawaii.
Figure both vehicles are pretty easy to hot wire so fuel shut off is one of the best ways.
They got it started and drove about two blocks and left it for the HASP to find.
Anything you cam do to slow them down will help.
