The knife in the Gen. Mechanic's box
Since the cat's out of the bag that I'm building one of these, has anyone figured out what the 2 blade pocket knife is in Greg's manual scans?
Anyone care to guess what the likely manufacturers are?

Re: The knife in the Gen. Mechanic's box
Are you talking about the knife in figure 12 A - Knife - 41-k-370, if so here it is:
The knife is a common electricians 2 bladed knife that was used a lot through almost ever war. The signal corp and most electricians refer to as TL-29:
They can still be bought from Klien tools and other tool mfg that make electrical tools. The one I have posted above has wood scales (sides) and is stamped with the Signal Corps tool ID number TL-29. This knife is from my CS-34 toolkit:
These knifes will come under brands like: CAMILLUS, Utica, Ulster, Case, Kutmaster and sever others. Just search eBay for TL-29.

Re: The knife in the Gen. Mechanic's box
Luke, Three of the guys I have talked with about assembling the Mechanic's Box have come to the realization that most likely we would have to guess and hope for the best on brands and era issues. I am assembling mine by looks alone for now, and as information becomes availible to narrow down correctness, I will change them out.
The electricians knife is still being made with the same design as WWII. So unless they have a "knifealolics" page someplace on the web. I would go by design.
Do a search for Herbrand on ebay. There is a seller that has a few on buy it now.

Re: The knife in the Gen. Mechanic's box
My knife is a Ulster model, although I have 4 or 5 of the later klein models. The knives are almost all identical across the brands that I mentioned. The ones with the wood scales (sides) are a better choice for a WWII kit. A lot of them will not have the TL-29 mark like mine does and will be a better fit for this tool box. Some of the knives used a bakelite material and then later on they used a sort of harder pressed plastic with a wood grain pattern.

Re: The knife in the Gen. Mechanic's box
I'm probably going to hold off buying one for the moment. They don't seem all that common. As a matter of fact Roger, there probably ARE knifeaholics sites out there and it's just a matter of stumbling across them. I used to be able to look at the tang stamp on a Case XX pocket knife and date it just like some of you guys can tell the difference between a GPW and an MB by smelling a photo.
In about 20 minutes of surfing today, I found out how to put a production period on Camillus fighting knives, and we KNOW they supplied knives because of their version of the Ka Bar. I do not believe that same tang stamping fully applies to their folding knives.
On a different subject, I bet that offset flat tip screwdriver will be fun to find!

The GM Tool Set depicted in the 10/01/44 ORD 6 SNL G-27 shows a knife with U.S. ARMY stamped into the (wood) handle (illustration RA PD 61759). Cole shows examples of knives with such markings made by KA-BAR and PAL. Something to aspire towards? But it's not like tool guys ever get anal or anything

Here's a foto of the TL 29 knife, this one is made by Ulster. I got this one last summer for about $24 usd, maybe cheaper now because of the credit crunch. The Plier and leather case with a WWII knife maybe about $80 usd.

My TL 29 in sitting comfortaby in the mech. kit, but after reading this thread
I thought I'd glance at the auction site. Obviously there are more folks putting
these kits together than are owning up to it Luca . The good ones are buzzing
with bids! Could just be a coincidence though .

Re: The knife in the Gen. Mechanic's box
Kevin your cs-34 kit is pretty nice. I was able to find my kit the first or second week of this April at a yard sale for $15. Although the pliers are not the correct ones for the kit, they are side cutters and not the lineman style you have. I do have the correct stamped TL-13 pliers around here somewhere that I found last year sometime.
A side not on the knives...
There are some really crazy knife fanatics out there that are paying $60-$100 for some of the better/NOS TL-29 style knives on ebay. I have seen good clean examples of these at flea markets, yard sales and antiques stores for no more than $20. My advice is to get a good looking one for the toolkit, one that looks like it is used a bit. These knives are known and are heavily collected. Buy a good example within reason and spend your money on other tools for the set. With time you will find the right knife for the right price. There are a lot more of these knives for sale out there on ebay and in the wild then just about any other item in that box.

Hi Nordstar, thanks for the update on prices and the good advice, Folks living Stateside have a good advantage of garage sales etc.
I was tempted to enter the Gen mech tool box venture last year but shipping costs and the estimated competition with collectors here had me draw the conclusion to stay out.
l'm looking forward to seeing the collectons grow.
